It is the norm that has set everything in motion all over the world as people offer and exchange services.

COSCO Shipping

COSCO Shipping

It also applies to the transport of cargo from China to the Netherlands, and you will get the best services on offer.

The cost of freight from China to the Netherlands will vary depending on the kind of services you choose.

Risky and slower freight is often cheaper than the safer and faster freights.

The cost of freight for your cargo will depend on the following factors:

  • Number and size of the cargo you are transporting.
  • The weight of the cargo you intend to transport.
  • Type of cargo you are transporting as fragile goods will cost more to transport because of extra care and insurance. Perishable goods like fruits attract more charges because they require special equipment like refrigerators to keep them fresh.
  • Type of freight you choose for the transport of your cargo.
  • The distance between the port of origin in China and the destination port in the Netherlands. The longer the distance, the more money you will pay for the freight.
  • The shipping company you will use to transport your cargo.

The factors you have gone through will be great determinants for the cost of freight from China to the Netherlands.

The bigger the size of the cargo the more you will pay and the more weight it bears the money to pay.

You should know that when you are transporting cargo, there are different types of freights that you can choose.

The type of freight that you will choose for your cargo is a significant determinant of cost.

You will go through the set conditions of calculating the value of freight with a freight forwarder as an assistant.

Continue reading as I will take you through the procedure of calculating the cost of freight.

First, you will have to choose the shipping company that will help you transport the cargo to the Netherlands.

It will vary depending on the shipping mode you will choose such as air, sea or rail transport.

Specify the port of origin and port of destination so that you can know the distance the transporter will cover.

Secondly, determine the size, weight, and number of the cargo you are transporting by weighing and counting if necessary.

Classify the cargo accordingly and fit them into categories available such as the standard National Motor Freight Classification (NMFC).

Many shipping companies prefer to use NMFC to calculate the freight cost of certain commodities.

You will then package the goods well according to the NMFC standards with the help of available assistants.

Make sure you choose the best size of package for your cargo because bigger packages will attract more charges. Include any other shipping fee that your cargo may encounter including:

  • Set up fees in case the cargo is bulky and requires special handling.
  • Handling fees just in case the mode of transport changes at the destination such as customs clearance and all that.
  • Cost of insurance in case the freight forwarder is your insurance provider of choice.

Do the final calculation by multiplying the weight, and the rates then add the additional costs for the final value.

Make sure that you come to an agreement with the shipping company on the fee you will pay.

Sign a binding deal for documentation, pay the money accordingly and remember to take the receipt with you for reference.

LCL Shipping from China to the Netherlands

LCL is an abbreviation for Less than Container Load which is a deal your freight forwarder will organize for you.

In this case, you might be having goods that cannot fit into a whole container.

The freight forwarder will earn his dues by organizing on how to transport your cargo safely in a container.

In this scenario, the freight forwarder will find other customers who have a limited amount of goods too.

He will then get one container that will be enough to fit all the other goods from different people.

In the long run, the goods will fit a container, and you will share the cost of hiring that particular container.

The freight forwarder, in this case, might get a higher value for this type of arrangement than that of FCL.

He might charge slightly higher per cargo and combining them will bring him better returns.

Freight forwarder

Freight Forwarder

It is also dependent on the people who will be using the same route as the one you intend to use.

In the transformation of ocean freights, a lot has come up including groupage where cargo is put together in containers.

It has been a significant advantage in shipping as the load fits well when they are in containers.

This is also more cost-effective, and you will save a lot of money when you decide to share the cost of a container.

It is, however, quite risky a process as your cargo might get lost in the process of transporting.

Besides, it is also possible that your cargo might break and it will be difficult to trace the primary cause.

It is essential to have insurance for this type of shipment if your cargo is fragile.

The procedure that involves LCL shipping is quite simple depending on the type of freight forwarder you have.

In your case, you will call the freight forwarder and then give him the specifications of the cargo.

You will then let them handle the rest of the procedure including loading it on the ship after paying.

  • FCL 40″ (Volume: 76.3 cubic meters)

It simply means that the whole container space available is for you to explore and use for your cargo.

Types of shipping containers

Types of shipping containers

You will not be sharing the space with any other individual thus making your cargo safer and more secure.

The most common practice among different people using FCL is fairly filling the container as their goods cannot fill it.

The cost of FCL is, however, cheaper in comparison to the LCL because of the absence of handling fees.

Since it is not full, the cost of handling it will be low in comparison to LCL which is often full.

Most of the FCL shipments are from the door to the port, but there are other options to choose from such as:

  • The door to door delivery of goods
  • Port to port deliveries
  • Port to door deliveries

The shipper will take responsibility for transporting cargo from the door of the supplier to the destination port.

From this point, the buyer or consignee will organize for more transport options including from the port to the door.

This will, however, vary depending on the Incoterms that you choose to show the financial obligations and responsibilities for every party.

Your ability to pack and load the cargo onto the container will help you in reducing the cost of transport.

The trailer will bring the cargo to your doorstep and allow you two hours for loading and arranging the cargo.

This process is common among companies that have done it for a while and is known as the live load.

If you are unable to do the packaging and loading on your own, there are individual companies that can do it.

They are good at packaging and making appropriate packages such as wooden boxes for transporting the cargo.

You will get such services from these companies at a fee which will, in turn, increase the cost of shipping.

In the process of drafting an agreement, you will include door to door services and discuss the cost thereof.

On the same breath, the cost of insurance in case of any damages have to be in the discussion.

You will agree on the party that will take responsibility in case of an accident that will damage the goods.

Managing Shipping from China to the Netherlands

The process of getting cargo from China all the way to the Netherlands involves many processes and players.

Many people will find it difficult and tiresome and so they get the services of other individuals like the shipping companies.

The process is however quite simple, and I will take you through the most critical steps to take.

Hire Freight Forwarder in Netherlands or Freight Forwarder in China

The first step is getting a freight forwarder who will act on your behalf through most of the transactions.

Freight forwarder

Freight forwarder

In this context, you will only need to pay the freight forwarder and expect the cargo at you agree.

Freight forwarders operate in both countries so it should not be so hard a task to find one.

You can as well go online and find thousands of freight forwarders under the organization of freight forwarders.

The list is very long, but you can narrow it down to just a few by selecting the country you need.

You will find freight forwarders that operate in China as well as those that operate in the Netherlands.

You are however under caution not to select freight forwarders with minimal experience.

This because they may not be able to handle certain calibres of goods.

You should also beware of conmen who would lie to you for personal gain with no work done.

Shipping from China to Netherlands Customs Clearance

Before you transport your cargo to the Netherlands, there are specific clearance procedures that you will have to pass through.

These include clearing with the customs authority in China and in Netherland for permission to proceed.

There are however certain restrictions you need to look at before you transport your cargo as shown below.

Prohibited and Restricted Imports in the Netherlands

The Netherlands has strict policies and restrictions against certain types of cargo from China that it will not allow.

Some of the goods are also not to come into the country without an import license form the government.

These goods include environmentally unfriendly cargo and strategic goods such as:

  • Ammunitions and weapons
  • Protected species of flora and fauna
  • Drugs and narcotics
  • Pets
  • Counterfeit goods and articles
  • Specific foodstuffs and animal products
  • Medicines
  • Culture goods such as antiques and art
  • Pleasure crafts such as boats
  • Motorcycles and cars

Customs Clearance in China

It is possible to conduct customs clearance at any of the customs offices all over the country.

You will need to avail the CIF, a commercial invoice and a packing list of the cargo you have.

The documentation should have the complete name of the country such as “The People’s republic of China”.

Cleared for public release by USARCENT PAO, MAJ Renee Russo. For additional information, contact MCC Anthony C. Casullo at anthony.casullo@me.navy.mil or DSN 318-439-6250 or COM 011-973-1785-6250

 Customs clearance

The process of clearing cargo at the customs offices may be tedious and is often left to the freight forwarder.

Shipping companies have experience in this field too and will help if you contact them.

Netherlands Customs Regulations and Clearance Process

The process of clearing cargo at the port in the Netherlands requires specific important documentation.

Government of Netherlands

Government of Netherlands

As the goods arrive on the port, you should present the documents so that they can take them through certification.

After that, the cargo will also go through inspection, before given entry into the country.

The process may be complicated for people who have never tried it before.

It is often a responsibility of the shipping company or the freight forwarder to help you.

In the process, you should also try and learn the whole process to avoid future problems.

Netherlands has special VAT rates as follows:

  • There are no charges on the exports from the Netherlands.
  • 6% VAT on certain necessities including food, transport and medicine.
  • 21% is the most common VAT on most commodities.

The VAT on imports and that of the local goods is the same and does not change much.

The government will use the CIF in charging VAT on imports at the point of entry.

It will also include charges on excise taxes, levies, import duty and other taxes.

Importers will have to pay the charges at the point of entry before the goods go into the country.
